Nightly notes
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:07:53 PM »
The time you are more likely to remember a dream is right after waking up from it. Especially if you have a tendency to wake up during the night, you can use this to your advantage. This is the reason it's a good idea to keep pen and paper near your bed. But, just how to make use of taking nightly notes depends on your sleeping habits. I've divided this into light sleepers and heavy sleepers.

However, everybody will need to keep pen and paper at your bedside. It's not necessary to turn on the light when you take dream notes, as long as you can decipher your writing. You can use a tape recorder as an alternative, as long as you don't have a bed partner or roommate.

Use of nightly notes for sleepers who awaken during the night

Build up the habit to have your first thought when waking up being this: "What was I just dreaming?" Whenever you wake up and remember something, write it down. If writing down a full dream in the middle of the night wakes you up too much, then just write down some keywords to help your memory. It's better than nothing!

Use of nightly notes for heavy sleepers

If you're not used to it, it can seem hard to wake up in the middle of the night. However, it's not impossible! If you sleep alone, you can set your alarm clock to wake you up at approximately 90 minutes intervals, or the at time of night of your choice when you think you will be in REM sleep. This can be combined with WBTB. When you wake up, focus on remembering your dream(s) and write down at least some keywords to help your dream recall. If you can't use an alarm clock, you can drink plenty of water before bedtime, and let nature wake you up during the night.

For those who sleep with others who might not be so enthusiastic about waking up at 90 minute intervals, try setting a cell phone to vibrate mode and setting an alarm with that.

I think it was Clairity who first suggested that one to me.

For those (like me) who can't decipher their notes in the morning nor remember what the dream was about from the keywords, a few tips:

- Write using LARGE capital letters
- Use symbols and pictures too
- Rather than just one word, write as much down as you can recall.  This has two purposes: the obvious one of making life easier when reading the notes; and the no so obvious one of helping to cement the dream details in the conscious mind.

Sure, it does help your recall to write down all that you can remember, but for me and others, it's really hard to fall back asleep after keeping your mind active when you write down a full dream. That's why I'm saying at least write down some keywords, as remembering more details is not worth losing sleep over.

Ohhh, and it might be good to get one of those reading lights if you're like me and hate waking up to turn on a bright light to write notes, trust me, note taking in pitch black can lead to writing over things you already read... and then if you're lucky you can read what at least one of those lines were for.

I've never been good with notes, only used a paper 2 times in the past 2 years. But for the sake of this workshop, I'll try to make notes for the next full week :content:

The 90min interval alarm is a good one! I use it both for dream-remembering and to ensure I have exactly 1 sleep cycle left before I have to get up.

A thought from the world of astronomy - red light doesn't affect your night vision.  That's why airplane instrumentation is lit in red.

A low power flashlight with a bit of red cellophane is the ticket to going easy on the night-adjusted eyes.

:) I am so going to try this, I just need some red cellophane and we're good for this little trial... but won't it be hard to find? They normally sell colored cellophane around the holidays.

You should be able to find it anyplace they sell wrapping paper and whatnot.

If that doesn't work, try either music store or photography shop that caters to pros - they will sell what are called "gels", for lighting.  A red gel shouldn't cost more than a buck or two.

Okay :) This will be my goal for today/the week. I think other people should try it too, because there's always that whole "results may vary" thing.

I use one of those Salt Rock lamps - gives an orangish/reddish glow. In the past I've used light pens - they had some cheap promotional ones at Staples for awhile. I bought a really nice one once that didn't last very long. Now I'm back to using a digital recorder - and I'm still working on speaking clearly!  :D

Thanks for sharing all the tips on the alternative light sources! :D

For those of you mumbling when recording, have you tried speaking slower? Does that help?

I suppose speaking slower would help. I have noticed that 90% of the time I start really slow and then speed up as my memory catches up. It's like I have to talk as the memory presents itself. Then I try to type it all out without listening to the file over and over - starts out slow and then I can't keep up!

I just need to get rich and hire someone to be there every 90 minutes to record what I say. Wait...that'd be creepy - :sos:  WANTED: Someone to watch me sleep and take notes.
