Hello everyone!

My name is bluebird and my DJ is suitably named as I will be taking my first steps into lucid dreaming with you all. I am starting from scratch, as a person who firstly had difficulty even recollecting a dream in the morning. I will be aiming to achieve at least one DILD sometime soon, but we will see as time goes on

Hopefully you will enjoy walking through this journey with me, as so many of you once did. Maybe you'll remember a few things along the way, or maybe you'll learn something new.

27th January 2012

The tutorials I have been reading finally pay off, and I recall not one but two dreams from the previous night.

1. I find myself in a cave system in Minecraft. The walls are exactly the colours of the game and I see the names of my friends who I often play with through the walls. One by one the names start to disappear and I lose contact with my friends (I guess I could talk to them). I start to panic and head back through my cave but it goes black. 4 zombies walk out of the darkness towards me (my friends). I get scared and wake up.
No lucidity or attempted reality check despite the strange environment, dream was very vivid though which is a first for me

2. Again another brief dream, I find myself in a hotel room with a girl I recently met. I find myself in the classic scenario of having to leave the room to get ice, why I would ever need to do this is beyond me. After climbing several flights of stairs, I turn around and she is behind me with. She is angry about something and pulls out a bright water pistol. She tries to shoot it at me, but it simply leaks a huge puddle of water on the floor (way more water than the pistol could have possibly contained. I do not remember if the dream ended here but if there was more it is forgotten.
Again, even in this ridiculous situation I did not attempt a RC. I think I should work on them more in real life

Alcohol and recall generally do not mix.

I'm aware :( unfortunately I read about it but had already made plans to be socialising that evening. Does it harm recall in a long term way, or is it ok to drink once a week?

Doesn't seem to harm it in the long term - no. But on nights you drink, you'll probably not want to be planning for big lucid endeavors.

Other things do have well established long term detrimental effects on recall and lucidity. Smoking marijuana, for one example.

Not to encourage drunken rowdiness as a lucidity practice, but I've found that some of my most interesting and memorable nights of dreams were after bouts of drinking (light or heavy). I think this is due to the rebound effect of alcohol on REM sleep, so the longer you sleep in afterwards, the more vivid dreams you'll have. Of course, you probably won't remember much of your dreams if the first thing you do when you wake up is race to the toilet.

1st February 2012

I was expecting this morning to be writing another depressed post about having no recollection. However, this is only half true. I have a memory of being angry at my housemate for stealing my orange juice, and when I asked them they went quiet instead of denying it. It wasn't until I went to grab a drink this afternoon that I realised the carton was not even open.

Oh dreams, you deceiving devil. That has to be the most convincing dream I've had, as I woke up and assumed it was a real memory. Everything was in place, and if I had done a RC there I believe I could have had an amazing lucid.

Onwards and forwards, I will get there soon :(

Ha, I've been there! That's one of the downsides of excellent dream recall. I remember being pissed off at one of my friends or family members all day and then on further reflection realized that, like your own experience, the transgression had taken place in the previous night's dream.
