Lucid Dreaming Acronym Glossary

Like most disciplines, Lucid Dreaming has evolved a language of its own. Here is a list of acronyms often used in lucid dreaming discussions:

  • AP - Astral Projection
  • CALD - Character Assisted Lucid Dream, a technique in which you create or harvest a dream character from a dream and work with them to acheive regular lucidity. Founded by Talon Arana of LD4all.
  • CES - Cranial Electro-Stimulation, a method of brainwave entrainment
  • DC - Dream Character, a character in a dream
  • DEILD - Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream, a technique in which you reenter sleep after waking up, achieving a lucid dream.
  • DJ - Dream Journal
  • DILD - Dream Initiated Lucid Dream - Becoming aware you are dreaming within a dream. The most basic of techniques; results from diligent Dream Journaling and Reality Checking. May also be a by-product of other, more advanced techniques.
  • EWOLD - Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, a book by Dr. Stephen LaBerge
  • FA - False Awakening, when you think you woke up but are really still dreaming
  • FILD - Finger Induced Lucid Dream, a WILD technique involving finger motion to hold on to consciousness while falling asleep
  • HI - Hypnogogic Imagery, the visions "seen" while falling asleep
  • IRL - In Real Life, what happens while awake
  • LD - Lucid Dream
  • LDS - Lucid Dreaming Supplements, vitamins, herbs and other things that may influence the ability to achieve and maintain lucidity
  • MILD - Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream - The use of mantra or visualization before sleeping in order to improve the chances of a successful DILD.
  • MM - Mortal Mist - This website - home a unique forum/community and a lot of useful information for aspiring oneironauts
  • OBE - Out Of Body Experience
  • RC - Reality Check, a test to see if you are dreaming or awake
  • REM - Rapid Eye Movement sleep, the type of sleep where dreaming is most likely to occur
  • RL - Real Life, being awake
  • SD - Shared Dream, two or more people experiencing the same dream at the same time
  • SP - Sleep Paralysis, the sensation of being paralyzed which can sometimes occur when attempting to WILD
  • VILD - Visually Incubated Lucid Dream, a method for incubating a dream that includes a reality check
  • WBTB - Wake Back To Bed, getting up for a short time during the sleep cycles to enhance the chances of achieving lucidity
  • WILD - Wake Initiated Lucid Dream, a common technique where you try to keep your mind awake as your body falls asleep, resulting in entering a dream, ideally lucid.
