Lack of Intensions (A Short Story of Dreamworld)
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:13:55 AM »

- Sorry to be late! Overslept.

- What is your alarm clock's name?

- What do you mean? That's silly. My alarm clock does not have a name.

- No wonder it is ineffective. An alarm clock needs a good name to draw power from. And just any name won't do. I once made the mistake of naming a former alarm clock Fluffy as a jest, and  that was of course a reflection of my not really expecting it to have the necessary power, thus of course it did not work.

- So what is a good name for an alarm clock in your opinion?

- My current alarm is named Melchizedek. It is not only highly effective, but it never runs out of power, never needs to be charged or reset, and always wakes me up at just the right time.

- Wow! That is impressive. What brand of alarm clock is it?

- Melchizedek does not have a brand! It exists purely in my mind: it is the power of intent. For example: I fall asleep intending to wake at 5, and I do.

- Ah! Good for you. But I could not do that, couldn't risk being always late.

- You are always late.

- You've got a point there. Still, I am not as good as you at intensions, I guess.

- With that attitude you won't be. Balthazar must be very disappointed with you.

- Balthazar?

- Your alarm clock.

- My alarm clock does not have a name! And if it did, I would certainly not name it Balthazar. And besides, alarm clocks cannot be disappointed: they do not have feelings and thoughts!

- Intension based alarm clocks do. Melchizedek is both part of my mind, and has a mind of its own. It was Melchizedek who suggested to me that your alarm clock is named Balthazar.

- Well, if I ever had an intension based alarm clock, I would not listen to its suggestions: I would be the one in charge.

- No, you wouldn't. Your intensions are not strong enough for that. But that's ok, Balthazar could pick up some of the slack. Of course, given how weak your intensions are, you would at times run the danger of waking up not when you intended to, but rather when Balthazar thought best, but you would still wake up exactly at the right time, you just would not realize that it was the right time.

- Ha! And how would that be any different from what is happening now?

- Oh, yes, you are right. Of course! Your intension based alarm clock being more powerful than your mechanical alarm clock must have been overriding your set wake up time. That's why you always think you are late!

Nice. I like the idea of an intention-based alarm clock.  8)

Thank you! I really appreciate feedback. Big motivation booster.

You do know that this is based on reality to some extent, right? We can by intensions make ourselves wake up at a specific time without alarm clock, and that actually is the way to do it for better dream recall and WBTB. I took that idea, and combined it with the idea of a tulpa. Plus, I once did get a new alarm, and then had a dream that it would not work unless I gave it a name, so I named it Fluffy. :)

I agree. Feedback is definitely motivating - it helps people stick with their talents and aspirations.

I think I've done that - woke myself up at a specific time without an alarm clock. Many days, before school (I graduated), I woke up around the time I was supposed to wake up, and I think that I was programmed to wake up around that time. (5 am-ish) Also, I didn't know what a tulpa was, but I looked it up, and it seems pretty interesting - object created by sheer mental or spiritual discipline. Fluffy is an interesting name, especially for an alarm clock. In real life, I sometimes name my stuff (I haven't for a long time, though).
